Another month in, and a tremendous amount is happening here at TC! The week of October 28 was STEM week; while so much of our learning at a vocational technical high school is centered on STEM anyways, our educators capitalize on this week to plan cross-curricular activities which truly highlight the integration of knowledge between academics and vocational programs or between vocational programs. Just a few of the highlights from the week include:

Legal and Protective Services and Dental - Odontology and Forensics

Plumbing, Chemistry, Physics - Calculating weight, pressure, volume

Science, EEC, Carpentry - How does your garden grow?

Cosmetology and AP Seniors - Zombie Wound Lab

Earlier this month, our Culinary students competed in a barbecue challenge at Upper Cape Cod Technical High School and took first place in the categories of Most Creative Barbecue, Best Chili and Overall Champion.

On the athletic fields, our fall teams continue to experience success. The boys Cross Country team recently won the vocational championship, holding their title as small-school champions! In other news, the cast was named for this year's drama production. All other clubs are in full swing, with Student Council doing the lion's share of the planning for Spirit Week. Student Ambassadors and Skills USA students played a pivotal role in supporting our Open House this past weekend as did student shop representatives and the boys soccer team, who assisted us in parking. This Open House is an event that every year reminds us of the strength of the Tri-County community and the power of our students to represent us well!

Finally, we have over 100 seniors out on Co-op.

While inside the building, it's business as usual, the construction continues to move along at a rapid pace and a groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 18. Please see the building site on our webpage for more information.

Students have begun to connect their vocational education to the active construction site. Grade 9 and 11 plumbing students toured the utility corridor and the site to see the work in progress to run lines up to the new school building (picture to the left). Pictured to the right (from left to right) are seniors Sydney Piette (Culinary), Jessop Trella (Plumbing), and Evan Rivas (Graphics); each had the opportunity to initiate a blast last week.

Student well-being continues to be a central focus of our staff. The school counselors have sent a counseling newsletter to keep families in the loop of happenings in the school counseling (formerly guidance) office.

Our school adjustment counselors hosted the first of a monthly counseling cafe, bringing information on well-being and the supports available at Tri-County to students in the cafeteria. Ben of the Franklin Police Department joined the crew. Students pictured here are Devin Parisi and Dominic Perrier.

It's Spirit Week!

Tickets for the Homecoming Dance (11/8, 6 - 9 p.m.) are being sold at the Cougar Corner in the cafeteria during all lunches this week.

We held a blast off ceremony for Ms. Magas, who was noted in the last edition of the Principal's Newsletter for her selection as one of four participants for a space simulation at the NASA space station in Houston, Texas. Mr. Alden, History teacher, served as our emcee for the event and all students counted down as she left the building on her last Friday afternoon here for the next 10 weeks. On 10/19, she sent the following from Houston, "Everyone here is great and there's a ton to learn and do. We're working full days 6-7 days a week preparing for 18 studies and 14 operational tasks." On 11/1, she participated in the mission ingress ceremony. We do not expect her to be able to have much contact while in the space habitat.

Final Notes

Available student supports: Deficiency notices were mailed to parents at the end of last week. Please encourage your student to take advantage of their teacher's afterschool extra help day and the Homework Center, if they are struggling. The Homework Center is open from 2:15 - 4 p.m., Tuesday - Thursday, with a late bus that departs at 4 p.m. Content area teachers are available to provide assistance. A separate testing site is open during these hours one afternoon a week.

An attendance reminder for all students and families: Participation in many of our extracurricular activities from dances to athletics and clubs to Co-op is dependent on students having fewer than four unexcused absences in a trimester. Excuse notes are accepted from medical providers, courts (i.e.) for 7 days after an absence. The full attendance policy is available in the Student Handbook which is posted on our website. If your student is struggling with attendance, please reach out to their grade level guidance counselor.
